Google “science of awe” or “benefits of awe,” and you will see that it is now becoming clear to science that STRONG EXPERIENCES OF AWE can have a host of profound psychological and even physiological effects, including that they:
(i) Tend to CALM AND FOCUS THE MIND, LOWER STRESS LEVELS, and INCREASE CREATIVITY;
(ii) Can increase feelings of EMPATHY, TRUST, COMPASSION, and ALTRUISM; and
(iii) Can, quite literally, IMPROVE OVERALL HEALTH and CAUSE PEOPLE TO LIVE MATERIALLY LONGER.
IMPORTANTLY, they have observed that THE MOST COMMON EXPERIENCES THAT AROUSE STRONG FEELINGS OF AWE involve SPENDING TIME WITH NATURE.
So, I invite you to sit back, turn up the volume on your computer, maximize the size of the viewing window, turn down the lights in the room, and watch this 5-minute video of what my wife and I have experienced in nature -- and VISUALIZE THE AWE we felt. Let it run, without pause. I believe you will see that what the researchers and we have found is true and profoundly important.
