Botswana - May 2010

Botswana is a landlocked nation in Sub-Saharan Africa, bounded by Namibia on the west, Zambia on the north, Zimbabwe on the east, and South Africa on the south. It has a rich, wonderful biodiversity that includes both wetlands, comprised of the Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park in the north, and the Kalahari Desert, which covers roughly 80% of the entire country, in the center.

Botswana is an Africa success story. It gained its independence from Great Britain in 1966 and has been governed ever since by a stable, democratic, multipart system. Within a year after gaining its independence, huge deposits of diamonds were discovered in Botswana, and, since that time, the economy of Botswana has been one of the fastest growing in the world. In recent times, Botswana has produced approximately $3.3 billion worth of diamonds a year.

The Okavango Delta is the largest inland delta system in the world, covering an area of about 15,000 square kilometers and filled with water channels, lagoons, swamps and islands. The photos in this Gallery were taken in the Okavango Delta, in the Chitabe Concesssion adjacent to the Moremi Game Reserve and in the Kwedi Reserve, and in the Linyanti Concession, bordering Chobe National Park in the northern Kalahari.
